Maryland offering, innovative

out-of-school programs that serve

the unique needs of single parents

with children ages 5 to 13.

Progressive Startup Stage

In 2010, Young Soldiers & Cadets (YS&C) launched an aggressive strategy to form relationships with regional foundations to secure capacity-building grants that will strengthen its ability to offer very badly needed out of school enrichment programs in Prince Georges County where at least 50% of the population of single working parents are under served with effective and affordable out of school child and youth programs.

Results & Impact

Recognizing the importance of a sound management, YS&C  is setting up infrastructure required for effective leadership and partnerships that will draw a broad funding mix.  Manage-2-Manage completed its internal assessment resulting in a Sustainability Plan that includes the following activities:

  1. Fortify board leadership using a series of workshops.
  2. Build alliances with local foundations and school systems.
  3. Launch target marketing strategies for low income single parents.
  4. Sustain programming for the 2011-2012 school year for 30 children.

Outcomes to date includes launching a new board of directors represented by education professionals, establishing governance policies and procedures, ensuring accountable state and federal reporting and developing letter of intent and proposal templates that YS&C representatives can use to advancing fund raising efforts.

Within three months, YS&C has strengthened board governance, internal management systems and fund raising activities.  This start-up nonprofit has learned how to and has submitted letters of intent for capacity building funding.  As a result, in March 2011, the Prince Georges Community Foundation invited YS&C to submit grant proposal.  Also, discussions are underway to launch the first Community Forum for Out-of-School Programs for Single Parents in 2012.
